The Primary Types of Reciprocating Aircraft Engines

Reciprocating engines, also commonly referred to as piston engines, are apparatuses that rely on one or more reciprocating pistons to transform pressure into rotational motion. Reciprocating engines are found in various applications, commonly serving aircraft, automobiles, marine vessels, and other systems that require an internal combustion engine for functionality. There are also a variety of reciprocating engine types, the hydraulic reciprocating engine and pneumatic reciprocating engine being two examples. For aviation in particular, there are a few common types of reciprocating engines that have found implementation, those of which include radial, in-line, and flat reciprocating engines. In this blog, we will provide a brief overview of each, allowing you to understand their importance and functionality.

Radial Reciprocating Engine

Radial engines are a common type that utilize radial-motion cylinders. From the central crankcase, each cylinder moves outwards during operations. Generally, these internal combustion engine types best serve small, narrow-body aircraft that are meant for passenger operations, rarely finding use on wide-body variations. On a typical radial reciprocating engine, one may find upwards of 30 cylinders present on the assembly, all of which encircle the crankcase. Due to the small construction of such engines, radial types often exhibited power to weight ratios that surpassed other designs at the time, and the arrangement of the cylinders promoted increased airflow for cooling.

In-Line Reciprocating Engine

In-line engines serve as the original reciprocating engines that found use on aircraft, featuring cylinders placed in a line as would be seen in an automobile. In contrast to other similar engines that feature one or more rows of cylinders, the in-line assembly utilizes a column where each cylinder is placed behind the other. This type of design can hold various benefits, one being that a narrow configuration enables the aircraft to have a narrower front fuselage. This comes at the cost of airflow, however, as in-line reciprocating engines require liquid cooling to optimally reduce the build-up of heat. With the equipment necessary for liquid cooling, the overall weight of the aircraft is increased to the detriment of efficiency.

Flat Reciprocating Engine

Flat reciprocating engines, also commonly referred to as horizontally opposed engines, are the final primary type of reciprocating engine that serve aircraft. Generally, such engines feature two banks of cylinders, all staggered on opposing sides of the central crankcase. All cylinders are provided with a pair of pistons, those of which meet at the combustion chamber. There are various benefits to such designs that come in the form of lower operating temperatures, shorter design lengths, and a lower center of mass. Flat reciprocating engines are also known for their ease of maintenance as well, making them a good choice for certain types of airplanes.

Beyond such examples, there are other various reciprocating engines that may be found on various models of aircraft, including V-type engines. With all options, it is imperative that regular maintenance and inspection is carried out so that aging or damaged parts can be repaired or replaced as necessary.
